Many recent AV receivers can accept multichannel PCM digital audio over earlier versions of HDMI. Most HDMI-equipped players can convert standard DD and DTS to multichannel PCM, and most (but not all) players can do the same for Dolby TrueHD.

I am planning to buy Onkyo TX-NR808 which has 1.4a HDMI inputs.I have Philips 8000 series 2D TV so I really dont need 3D support.I am concerned if 1.4a HDMI inputs in TX-NR808 can transmit the 1.3x HDMI signals without any problem or its meant to be only for HDMI 1.4a ? I guess 1.4a should include 1.3a & b but need to be very sure before I make a purchase.
